What is Black Opal?
“Black Opal” is a term used for opal that has a dark body color or base, often black or dark gray. The dark or black base often makes the play-of-color more obvious in black opals. This contrast of play-of-color in the line of fire over the dark background body color makes black opals very desirable and able to be sold for high prices. Black opals are mined almost exclusively at Lightning Ridge, Australia, the “Black Opal Capital of the World.”
